Steadfast September

September is a reliable month. Steadfast you could say...unwavering and unlikely to change. It's always about adjusting to new school schedules, routines, and early mornings. It's invigorating and exhausting all at the same time. There's a certain satisfaction with wrapping up summer and an air of excitement that fall is just around the corner. Days are still hot, but you just know that cooler weather is on the way. It feels like the year will suddenly slow down a bit.

Savannah came home for Labor day weekend. We've actually seen her a lot since she moved to Austin. Just about every other weekend. It's nice that she gets her time at school but can so easily head home when she wants. That of course means a nice opportunity for a family dinner at Nana's and Papa's house.

She bought a new chair for her apartment. She had to test it out here first. Of course, it's perfect for napping.

We are still working on Lorelei's room. She's been adding furniture and details to make it the perfect space. Our goal is to have everything done in time for her surgery on November 17. She will be spending a lot of time in there recovering afterward.

She bought herself a tv with her babysitting money (Thanks Candice!)

I can't believe how full our days are this year with two high school schedules. There are days I am literally out from sun up till sundown. I went to O'Connor's freshman night for my very last freshman in the family. Still can't believe Lorelei is in high school sometimes!

I've tried to have some fun on the weekends, even if I am tired. I was lucky enough to sub for Bunco at Jen's house. It was great to see so many friends all at once. These two have been some of my favorite people for a long time now.

When Savannah's in town we also do fun things like brunch!

September means my favorite time of year...college football! The Gator's only loss so far was a good one...We were so close!

I put out my fall decorations as soon as I could without feeling ridiculous!

Bring on the Pumpkin Spice!

The great big milestone of the month...Jonas got his braces off! He was so excited he literally counted down the days.

High school diving started for Lorelei and she had her first "practice" meet. Of course, it was the first real chilly day of the month. Poor thing froze! She dove with confidence though. It was wonderful to see her in her element.

And although it took the whole month to read, I finished a wonderful book yesterday, that I highly recommend, The Four Winds. This may have been my biggest accomplishment all month!

I'm about to read The Stranger, by Albert Camus. Jonas read it after Mr. Kline, his 5th-grade teacher and my co-worker/friend suggested it and even bought it for him. It comes highly recommended from both of them. Life-changing I hear.

When the sun rises tomorrow, it will be October. I'm looking forward to all things Fall!

Back-to-school 2024

I've been avoiding writing again. If I write about back-to-school, I must admit how hard things have been.  My heart has been broken by the harsh reality that my children are grown up. Being a teacher during back-to-school is easy for me. I'm a pro at that. My ELA buddy teacher even told me I could do it in my sleep. But facing the challenges of parenting young adults making major life transitions pulls at my heartstrings.  This school year, I only have two active students right now, and Bailey is in the works for a return to Texas Tech in the Spring semester. Lorelei started back first. She's a Senior! She had her first college visit at the beginning of August and most likely her last! She loved Texas State.   This was followed by Senior pictures.  We grabbed some sushi from our favorite restaurant after.  Then it was Senior Sunrise and the first day of school for her.  My first days back were great. I always enjoy reuniting with my team and We...

Feeling a little salty...

It may not look like I'm feeling a little salty in this picture, but  I was. It's June, and summer vacation had just started. All the chaos of May had me feeling a little tired, and I was experiencing what I thought was mild back pain from sciatica. I had noticed a few spots on my back and leg that looked like bug bites. Savannah was over, and we were about to head out to the pool when she noticed a crazy rash on my leg. She FaceTimed my mom, who said it looks like shingles?!?! John didn't agree and thought there was no way. Savannah insisted I go to urgent care. What do you know...I did have shingles. As soon as I mentioned how busy my month had been, that I was a teacher, had a Senior graduating, etc. The doctor said stress is one of the biggest causes of shingles. I was lucky this sweet girl of mine made me go get checked out. I was able to start meds and caught it early.  I did not have time for shingles! Hence the saltiness. That same week was Lorelei's high scho...

Roaring 20s~Boyen Bunch Style!

Is it just me, or were your 20s the best time in your life? The things I did in my 20s were memorable, adventurous, and not too crazy, but life-changing.   Here's my 20's list of accomplishments: I graduated from college with a BAE and an M.Ed.  I got my first real job (and three more teaching jobs to follow). I got married. We had the best time exploring the world together.  I moved more times than I can count, from Florida to Denver, to Houston, to finally settling and buying our first house in San Antonio. I was active: biking, hiking, snowboarding, playing tennis, and more. I made so many meaningful friendships and connections. I had not one but two kids! I had both Bailey and Savannah in my 20s!  I sure squeezed a lot into that decade. Looking back now, I cherish those years. But you know what maybe even a little more fun? Reliving your 20s at 50+ with your young adult kids.  Savannah has been living it up! She got a job she loves, her own place, and many g...
