The mayhem of Maycember

Let's see if my month was really as full of "May"-hem or as they are calling it these days across social media, "Maycember" as my calendar showed. See if you can keep up.

May 1-My student teacher Priscilla's last day and the Fiesta Party at school.

May 2-Moved Jonas out of the dorm after a quick stop at Texas State with the girls. We had a few rain showers, but a beautiful evening. We had dinner at our favorite taco place near campus before leaving town.

May 3-Lorelei's 18th birthday! We got her birthday freebies, her nails done, and she celebrated with friends at Cornyval.

May 5-9- Teacher Appreciation Week. I received lots of goodies, lunches, and gifts.

May 6-John's 55 birthday! We celebrated with a burger on the grill by Jonas and me!

May 8- Field trip to the Witte Museum with the 5th graders. They actually loved it. I bought myself a cute stuffed Gator in the gift shop to add to my collection at school. The kids named him Witte, of course.

May 9-Retirement party for a Carson teacher. We had a great time catching up with everyone.

May 10- Double feature! Ran a 5k in the morning with the Girls on the Run group I coached for Wernli. I beat my goal time by a few seconds. I came in at 44:32, and my goal was 45:00! Yay me! Prom in the evening for Lorelei! She looked absolutely amazing. We ran into Jen, Darren, and Holden, so we took some pictures together, too.

May 11- Mother's Day. Lots of love from my kiddos, including flowers, donuts, wine, gifts, a pool day, and dinner by Jonas.

May 12- Took the 5th graders to their future middle school, Bernal, for a visit.

May 13- Helped Jonas prep for his trip to Belize to study abroad for the summer semester. We got him a fresh haircut.

May 14- Fine Arts night at school. Did some last-minute shopping with Jonas and helped him pack.

May 15- Took Jonas to the airport at 7:00 a.m.! Wow, was I a nervous wreck. I'd been up since 3:30 and couldn't sleep from nerves. It was his first time flying! He was nervous too.

May 16- Staff end-of-year party at Stout's. I received a phone call from Jonas while I was there, letting me know he arrived safely.

May 20- Another double feature. First, Lorelei had her Senior walk at Carson. I took the day off from work so I didn't have to rush from there. It was an amazing morning reconnecting with old friends, students, and teachers.  In the afternoon, I went to my student teacher, Priscilla's, graduation.

May 21-Leadership meeting for next year! It's still weird to be creating the calendar for the next school year when we haven't even finished this one yet.

May 22- Lorelei had her final doctor's appointment with her orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Koeck. She was officially cleared!  Hooray!

May 23- 5th grade End-of-year party! It was a smash! The kids had a great time.

May 24- Paint and sip at the cutest coffee spot with the girls and Nana. We had a great time. I had afternoon tea with an old friend, Melinda. It was wonderful to catch up.

May 26- Had a family BBQ at Nana's. It was nice to eat and catch up.

May 29- 5th grade promotion ceremony! It was amazing! I'm so pleased with how it turned out this year. Bill Taylor, our local meteorologist, was our guest speaker. It was a magical way to end the school year.

May 30- Last day for teachers, and I packed up my room.

May 31- Finally got Lorelei's graduation announcements out in the mail, and did a little shopping. Lorelei wanted real cowboy boots for her graduation. We found her the perfect pair.

Summer vacation has officially started, but it won't feel that way until after Lorelei's graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 5. I still can't believe she is graduating! After 20 years of having kids in Northside ISD, the Boyen Bunch is done with public school.

Phew...it was truly the most packed month of May that I have experienced in a long time. I am mentally and physically exhausted! I'm ready to relax and recuperate after the mayhem of Maycember. I am hopeful for a peaceful and productive summer vacation!

Happy Summer Vacation friends!

Feeling a little salty...

It may not look like I'm feeling a little salty in this picture, but  I was. It's June, and summer vacation had just started. All the chaos of May had me feeling a little tired, and I was experiencing what I thought was mild back pain from sciatica. I had noticed a few spots on my back and leg that looked like bug bites. Savannah was over, and we were about to head out to the pool when she noticed a crazy rash on my leg. She FaceTimed my mom, who said it looks like shingles?!?! John didn't agree and thought there was no way. Savannah insisted I go to urgent care. What do you know...I did have shingles. As soon as I mentioned how busy my month had been, that I was a teacher, had a Senior graduating, etc. The doctor said stress is one of the biggest causes of shingles. I was lucky this sweet girl of mine made me go get checked out. I was able to start meds and caught it early.  I did not have time for shingles! Hence the saltiness. That same week was Lorelei's high scho...

Roaring 20s~Boyen Bunch Style!

Is it just me, or were your 20s the best time in your life? The things I did in my 20s were memorable, adventurous, and not too crazy, but life-changing.   Here's my 20's list of accomplishments: I graduated from college with a BAE and an M.Ed.  I got my first real job (and three more teaching jobs to follow). I got married. We had the best time exploring the world together.  I moved more times than I can count, from Florida to Denver, to Houston, to finally settling and buying our first house in San Antonio. I was active: biking, hiking, snowboarding, playing tennis, and more. I made so many meaningful friendships and connections. I had not one but two kids! I had both Bailey and Savannah in my 20s!  I sure squeezed a lot into that decade. Looking back now, I cherish those years. But you know what maybe even a little more fun? Reliving your 20s at 50+ with your young adult kids.  Savannah has been living it up! She got a job she loves, her own place, and many g...

The days are long...

...but the years are short. I've always loved the saying. One of my favorite authors and podcasters, Gretchen Rubin, is credited as the original author of this quote. I always think about it when another year passes. This year was fast and furious, as I have found all the years to be since my kids became teenagers. It seems like every time I turn around, there's another graduation, major milestone, or life achievement by one of my kids. 2024 had a high school graduation, college graduation, three moves from home to college, from college back to town, from across town, back to home. And the dust hasn't completely settled yet. Gretchen Rubin has another saying now that her kids are grown. Instead of an empty nest, she calls it an "Open Door." I love that too. My door will always be open to my kids and their friends, as it seems like there's always an extra somebody at our house too. It's one of my favorite times.  Thanksgiving break brought some new friends ...
