March Madness in April!

March Madness got the best of me! But can I just say GO GATORS! For real, though, the month of March flew by, and most of my days were spent at school, with my own kiddos, or watching basketball! Watching my beloved Gators make it to the finals and win it all was such a joy! My students got really into it too. We had our own version of March Madness in the class while reviewing for our STAAR Reading test. Of course, one of the teams was the Gators.

They played the final four games here in San Antonio. I didn't go, but a friend did and sent me pictures!

In my last post, I mentioned how Spring Break would be here before we knew it.  Well, it's been and gone and we are halfway through April already! But as usual, I spent more time thinking about writing than taking the time to sit down and write. So here I am, trying to make up for lost time. AGAIN!

We wrapped up February by celebrating my mom's 75th birthday! Although she is proclaiming she gets to reverse her numbers this year and is only 57! Jonas came home for the weekend to hang out and celebrate. We surprised her because she thought Jonas couldn't make it home.

We grabbed breakfast the next day, too.

Lorelei received official word from Texas State University! We have a Bobcat on our hands!
Savannah also got into both of the Ph.D programs she applied for! She accepted the offer from UT Health and will begin her Ph.D program in the fall. We celebrated with a night at Wine 101.
All dressed up for her Neuroscience Gala.

Spring break was very low-key.

We hung out at home and played lots of games and cards.

We headed to Austin for a day. Lorelei had a doctor's appointment, and Jonas had a different Spring break week than we did. We hung out with him after class, went to a cool park, and had sushi for dinner.

Lorelei went on a Spring Break adventure to Port Aransas with her friends. The first Boyen to have a real beach Spring Break. She had fun!

Jonas started his Spring Break, the weekend we ended ours. We headed to The Pearl for the Farmer's Market and some great weather.

Jonas caught up on sleep, eating home-cooked meals, and working out, while Lorelei and I headed back to school.

We ran into Xander, his BFF from elementary school, at HEB. It was great catching up.
One last hike...
And back to Austin he went.

I finally got my UBER MOM plates transferred to my new car. Now it really feels like it's mine. Plus I added my Longhorn Mom symbol that Jonas got me for my birthday.

School has been delightful, especially since Priscilla, my student teacher, is in full teaching. I've got to reap the reward of my own hard work on the Literacy Lounge I created at school. I've been spending lots of time hanging out with students while she teaches her awesome lessons.

Lorelei's Senior year is almost over! We've got her prom dress, her cap and gown arrived, and she's getting some more Senior pictures next week. She's working on scholarships and renewed her driver's license since she's turning 18! It's all happening even faster than I anticipated.

Panoramic picture day allowed them to try out the caps and gowns.

Last night, all dressed up for a friend's 18th birthday dinner.

Jonas is wrapping up his 1st year at UT. Today, Savannah went up to Austin to run the Longhorn Run with him. He'll be home for the summer on May 1 when I move him out of the dorms.

Savannah has had a rough month. It's not my story to share, but let's just say I am proud of all the little things she overcame. She faced a few different "adulting issues" that she tackled like a pro. Sure, she cried some tears, and ran home on more than one occasion, but in the end, she's standing proud! I'm excited for her to prioritize herself and achieve her dreams.

Laughing through her tears! She is so resilient!

Bailey's doing well. He and my dad had a great time last weekend at the Valero Open.

Big changes are coming his way too this fall. I'll keep you all posted!

Next week is Easter. Our April calendar is giving me just a taste of the "Mayhem" to come! Spring has sprung!

Happy Spring, friends!

Feeling a little salty...

It may not look like I'm feeling a little salty in this picture, but  I was. It's June, and summer vacation had just started. All the chaos of May had me feeling a little tired, and I was experiencing what I thought was mild back pain from sciatica. I had noticed a few spots on my back and leg that looked like bug bites. Savannah was over, and we were about to head out to the pool when she noticed a crazy rash on my leg. She FaceTimed my mom, who said it looks like shingles?!?! John didn't agree and thought there was no way. Savannah insisted I go to urgent care. What do you know...I did have shingles. As soon as I mentioned how busy my month had been, that I was a teacher, had a Senior graduating, etc. The doctor said stress is one of the biggest causes of shingles. I was lucky this sweet girl of mine made me go get checked out. I was able to start meds and caught it early.  I did not have time for shingles! Hence the saltiness. That same week was Lorelei's high scho...

Roaring 20s~Boyen Bunch Style!

Is it just me, or were your 20s the best time in your life? The things I did in my 20s were memorable, adventurous, and not too crazy, but life-changing.   Here's my 20's list of accomplishments: I graduated from college with a BAE and an M.Ed.  I got my first real job (and three more teaching jobs to follow). I got married. We had the best time exploring the world together.  I moved more times than I can count, from Florida to Denver, to Houston, to finally settling and buying our first house in San Antonio. I was active: biking, hiking, snowboarding, playing tennis, and more. I made so many meaningful friendships and connections. I had not one but two kids! I had both Bailey and Savannah in my 20s!  I sure squeezed a lot into that decade. Looking back now, I cherish those years. But you know what maybe even a little more fun? Reliving your 20s at 50+ with your young adult kids.  Savannah has been living it up! She got a job she loves, her own place, and many g...

The days are long...

...but the years are short. I've always loved the saying. One of my favorite authors and podcasters, Gretchen Rubin, is credited as the original author of this quote. I always think about it when another year passes. This year was fast and furious, as I have found all the years to be since my kids became teenagers. It seems like every time I turn around, there's another graduation, major milestone, or life achievement by one of my kids. 2024 had a high school graduation, college graduation, three moves from home to college, from college back to town, from across town, back to home. And the dust hasn't completely settled yet. Gretchen Rubin has another saying now that her kids are grown. Instead of an empty nest, she calls it an "Open Door." I love that too. My door will always be open to my kids and their friends, as it seems like there's always an extra somebody at our house too. It's one of my favorite times.  Thanksgiving break brought some new friends ...
