Ordinary moments...Extraordinary life.

April 30...hard to believe. March felt like forever and somehow, even in quarantine, April flew by.
The slow pace of life right now, isn't all bad. I have had moments of anxiousness over the unknown and trying to grasp the new normal of life, but for the most part, I've tried to maintain that focus of going with the flow. Like most bloggers, I've tried to capture the ordinary moments of quarantine life...while still creating extraordinary ones.

Ordinary moments...

We've really utilized the reading room...it's become the heart of our distance learning and my new classroom. We read, work, play, create and even find moments to relax. I have never loved this room more.



The kitchen is also a very active room in our new "stay home" program...the kids love to cook. Tons of new recipes have been tried, with an international flair. 



We've had egg drop soup, soppapillas, latkes, sushi, Swedish meatballs and many more yummy meals.


Learning takes places in a variety of locations at home. Lorelei revisited a sweet princess tent from her younger years and set it up as a nice little learning place. 


Learning breaks include plenty of sister and sun time, right on the back porch.


Home is always more cheerful with pretty flowers around. Wildflowers from the backyard and my beautiful orchid make the day and kitchen brighter. 



Outdoor time has been essential this month. Our park adventures make such a difference in our week and improve our attitude. Notice the sass in Lorelei's step. 


I love when Google Photos finds and creates these moments for me. Same park, same kids...


Easter flew under the radar this year, thanks to quarantine, but we marked the moment with traditions like egg dying and baskets, even though they are older and not as interested. 



They even humored me with a pitcure.



But what we won't allow to fly under the radar is Savannah's upcoming graduation. April has been filled with a multitude of good news for her. She won a wonderful scholarship, found her future roommate, got into the exclusive research program for Freshman at UT. She is so excited about her future, that she has been dealing beautifully with the disappointments of Senior year. Whether or not there's prom or graduation, we wanted to capture the special, beautiful young lady she has become. No professional photographer, just her boyfriend Alec, and an iPhone 11 to take a very memorable photo shoot of Senior pictures.






Love that sass...you can see where Lorelei gets it from!


Extraordinary life...

Life is weird right now...we all know it. It's unsettling, unsure and unknown. But what we can do, is our best to ensure these ordinary moments, make an extraordinary life.

Stay home, stay safe and appreciate these moments!

Feeling a little salty...

  It may not look like I'm feeling a little salty in this picture, but  I was. It's June, and summer vacation had just started. All the chaos of May had me feeling a little tired, and I was experiencing what I thought was mild back pain from sciatica. I had noticed a few spots on my back and leg that looked like bug bites. Savannah was over, and we were about to head out to the pool when she noticed a crazy rash on my leg. She FaceTimed my mom, who said it looks like shingles?!?! John didn't agree and thought there was no way. Savannah insisted I go to urgent care. What do you know...I did have shingles. As soon as I mentioned how busy my month had been, that I was a teacher, had a Senior graduating, etc. The doctor said stress is one of the biggest causes of shingles. I was lucky this sweet girl of mine made me go get checked out. I was able to start meds and caught it early.  I did not have time for shingles! Hence the saltiness. Roaring 20s~Boyen Bunch Style!

Is it just me, or were your 20s the best time in your life? The things I did in my 20s were memorable, adventurous, and not too crazy, but life-changing.   Here's my 20's list of accomplishments: I graduated from college with a BAE and an M.Ed.  I got my first real job (and three more teaching jobs to follow). I got married. We had the best time exploring the world together.  I moved more times than I can count, from Florida to Denver, to Houston, to finally settling and buying our first house in San Antonio. I was active: biking, hiking, snowboarding, playing tennis, and more. I made so many meaningful friendships and connections. I had not one but two kids! I had both Bailey and Savannah in my 20s!  I sure squeezed a lot into that decade. Looking back now, I cherish those years. But you know what maybe even a little more fun? The days are long...

...but the years are short. I've always loved the saying. One of my favorite authors and podcasters, Gretchen Rubin, is credited as the original author of this quote. I always think about it when another year passes. This year was fast and furious, as I have found all the years to be since my kids became teenagers. It seems like every time I turn around, there's another graduation, major milestone, or life achievement by one of my kids. 2024 had a high school graduation, college graduation, three moves from home to college, from college back to town, from across town, back to home. And the dust hasn't completely settled yet. Gretchen Rubin has another saying now that her kids are grown. Instead of an empty nest, she calls it an "Open Door." I love that too. My door will always be open to my kids and their friends, as it seems like there's always an extra somebody at our house too. It's one of my favorite times.  Thanksgiving break brought some new friends ...
